My Alternative Medicine Trifecta

I don’t know about you, but I’m an alternative medicine fanatic. It saves me in a pinch every time, and it just feels so much better. But if you’re on the road like I am, this is likely one of your biggest challenges. Yeah? So how the heck do you pack long-term, light and for every worst-case scenario?

Through a bunch of trial and error on previous trips (aka lagging around an entire pharmacy on my back), I think I’ve finally found my ultimate trifecta when it comes to conquering unplanned nuances on the road. Drum roll please!

1. Colloidal Silver

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

3. Activated Charcoal Tablets

Colloidal Silver

Note * this is often a topic of controversy. While I am happy with my research and the results I’ve seen from personal use, this is an alternative remedy that is widely critiqued by some. Please do your research and assess whether it is for you or not.

What is it?

Colloidal silver might be the king of alternative medicine. It’s a powerful and natural antibiotic, as well as being antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal. It was used commonly before modern-day antibiotics, and is the reason royalty is nicknamed ‘Blue Blood’.

What can it be used for?

You can use it for almost anything- I’m not even kidding. Here is a general list:

  • Nebuliser- for those who get gnarly chest infections, this works a charm.
  • Ingesting for sore throat
  • Swirling around a sore tooth to kill tooth bacteria
  • A few drops in the ears at the first sign of a cold- this is my all-time favourite. A cold begins in the ears, and prevention is the best way to fight a cold.

The Science

Colloidal silver is basically filtered water with suspended silver particles inside. You can easily make your own, however, all of the controversial issues surrounding CS come from people consuming homemade batches, so be careful!

My Experience

I am obsessed with this stuff. It has honestly been a bit of a miracle for me- I have asthma that flares up terribly when I have a cold, and it knocks me out for a good few weeks. Since taking CS I can honestly say my chest infections have reduced tenfold and sickness is usually prevented in the first place.

It’s so diverse and has so many amazing healing properties; I feel like it has been a remedy for 99% of my issues on the road. I can’t remember which brand of CS I use (I’ve been travelling with it emptied into 100ml clear bottles).. but I do know that Sovereign Silver is renowned for its quality.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a severely underrated player in the alternative medicine game. You probably already have it in your kitchen cupboard. From balancing your pH to managing wounds to benefiting insulin production, ACV is something I always need to have on hand.

What can it be used for?

  • Gets rid of dandruff
  • Reduces itch from bug bites
  • Relieves sunburn
  • Aids in clean and fresh skin
  • Soothes a sore throat
  • Eases heartburn and indigestion
  • Neutralises odour- keep those feet smelling fresh and swap out your deodorant!
  • Sinus congestion

My Experience

I have been an avid off-and-on user off ACV since I was a teenager- I take it religiously when I have a cold (to kill the bacteria in my throat) and have also used it successfully on pesky athlete’s foot (courtesy of hostel showers), and a bunch of other things.

I use cheap Aldi brand apple cider vinegar right now (budget life), but it’s always best to use a good quality ACV that contains The Mother (strands of proteins, enzymes and friendly bacteria). I know that Bragg’s ACV is well known for being good quality.

Activated Charcoal

Sounds weird- but hear me out. Activated charcoal is an ancient remedy for toxins. It binds to toxins, heavy metals, poisons and intestinal gases to flush them out of your body.

What can it be used for?

  • For a stomach bug, eating bad street food, gas, bloating, diarrhoea, nausea etc.
  • Anti-ageing properties
  • Reduces indigestion
  • Prevents hangovers (YEP)
  • Cleanses your blood
  • Alleviates allergies
  • Boosts antifungal protection
  • Naturally reduces pain

My Experience

It’s inevitable to catch some sort of tummy bug when travelling to some areas- but AC stops all of that. Time and time again I have used AC as a preventative when I feel like I’ve eaten something dodgy. One time I even drank a whole glass of tap water in Vietnam from our sink. I popped a couple of AC tablets and felt good as new the next day.

The Science

It’s the byproduct of burning a carbon source (wood or coconut shells etc). The substance is activated by the high temperature and becomes a highly absorbent material with millions of tiny pores to lock onto toxins!

I use Charcotab’s and they have worked brilliantly!

Do you pack any alternative medicines in your bag? What do you swear by?
